MEC Values in Action Schools Project (VASP): Youth Voice – Fostering Inclusiveness, Respect and Tolerance

In 2009 the MEC will implement a national project on Values Education funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Work Place Relations (DEEWR). Maroondah SC, Parkwood SC and Ringwood SC members, local community group representatives and VASP project advisors will participate in VASP events during the year.

Project Snapshot:

Within our local school and wider community there is a growing need to develop student awareness and understanding of cultural diversity and to implement specific strategies that build positive relationships between members of different cultures.

Through classroom and co-curricular activities our cluster of schools will investigate the values that are important for developing a connected and inclusive community.

The project will also incorporate a pilot program for students, teachers and parents linking emotional intelligence to the ability of young people to become tolerant, respectful and inclusive members of society.

Overall, the MEC project has the capacity to stimulate thinking and discussion about identity and belonging, to challenge misconceptions related to different cultures and to illustrate the power of Youth Voice to change community attitudes.
